The 2019 season began with the launch of the new shirt. It was decided in 2018 that the Club needed a change of image and, after much debate, a new design was agreed. It had its first outing during the Opening Drive on April 13th.
The Men’s MDL A Team gave a good account of themselves to retain their position in Division 1, while the B team achieved promotion to the next Division. The Ladies' A Team was promoted, building on their success in the last two seasons while the Ladies' B Team missed promotion by just one point! The Ladies also reached the final of the 4-3-2-1Competition, sadly losing out to Torquay BC on a grey evening in September.
The O55s Men’s League was another tale of success as St Mary’s won the W Division while results in the Riviera Mixed Triples League were a credit to the relatively inexperienced players who were learning the basics of a new sport.
D Day Celebrations
In 2019, Brixham had a celebration of the 75th anniversry of the D Day Landings, a WW2 event in which the town played a significant role. June 6th was the key date, although there were other 1940s events going on between 1st and9th June.
St Mary's BC held its own DDay celebration on 5th June with novelty bowls, a barbeque and fancy dress. It was a great day with fabulous weather and lots of fun!
The final of Brixham St Mary’s Invitation Triples took place on Sunday 21st July. Winners of the competition were Mick Cox, Val Northall and Skip Roger Hore from Paignton Bowling Club while second place went to the team from St.Mary's, skipped by Richard Sanders with Eddie Curl and Theresa Stevenson. It's a popular event in the Club's calendar with the opportunity to host other clubs for bowls, food and a drink from the well-stocked bar.
The trophies and prize money were presented by President, Irene Fletcher.
The Charity Pairs Competition
This event was held on 18th August and, as usual, it was followed by a presentation of the money collected through the season for the Captains' charity. The charity nominated for 2019 was Brixham Does Care which provides support for the elderly in the Brixham area. Two main events contribute to the fund raising, one being the pairs match and the other a concert by Dejas Vu a local little big band. This year, the concert held on the terrace of the Berry Head Hotel providing a relaxing backdrop for the evening diners. The competition was won by Dave Giffard and Mary Hall
President, Irene Fletcher presented the cheque for £460 to Brixham Does Care Chairman, Martin Paddon.
11th August was a special day for the Eclipse Cup as it was exactly 20 years since the eclipse took place. In celebration we had an exceptional high tea and a cake. The cup was won by a team from Paig
September 7th and 8th was a weekend of glorious weather, perfect for the celebration of an excellent season's play. We had an all day barbecue for players and spectators and the whole event was a successful social as well as a playing event. For the first time in many years the winner of the Open was a lady and this is an indication of the strengthening Ladies' Section of the Club. Overall the standard of play was very high and conducted in a spirit of comradeship and fair play.
The end of the season, as usual, was our celebratory dinner at Chrston Golf Club. After a most enjoyable Christmas dinner, the winners received their trophies and President Irene Fletcher handed over the chain of office to the new President Tony Highfield.
