In 1938, Brixham Council bought two fields near St Mary's Church for £1160 to provide tennis courts, a football pitch, a bowling green and other leisure facilities for the local community. St. Mary's Park with its new bowling green opened on 1st June 1940. (This information was taken from 'A Torbay Century' by John Pike 2003 by a previous Lady Captain)
Over the years St Mary's BC has evolved into an organisation known for drawing the best from people, both as bowlers and members of the club. Our membership has all but doubled over the past five years as we have developed our recruitment and coaching programmes. We have an all-year programme of events that keeps people involved both socially and as active players. We host county matches, and our own invitation triples and charity pairs competitions. On a more practical note, car parking is free and the clubhouse has wheelchair access.
New bowlers, when they join, are entitled to free membership for the first year and this includes coaching and the loan of bowls until they decide to invest in their own equipment. Coaching sessions take place on Mondays and Fridays from 10am to 12pm. Inexperienced bowlers will be encouraged to start playing competitively as soon as they feel ready.
Open Day is an event that takes place every year at the beginning of the season and it provides an opportunity for anyone interested to come along to meet existing members and to give bowling a try.
