19th September 2018
Another bowls year nearly over and one that BSM can be proud of with some successes and some near misses.
Top honour must go to the men's 'A' team for wining promotion to Division 1 of the MDL. This the first time in the Club's history that this has been achieved and one that all in the Club should be proud of. A big well done to all concerned! It will be a challenge next year but one that the Club will relish I am sure.
Next we must congratulate the men on the W Division of the Over 55s. They managed to get to the play off finals this season. In a nerve-racking semi-final against Bitten Park they went down on the very last end. But what a match it was with some excellent bowling from both teams. The team eventually went on to win the 3rd place game and brought home a cheque for £25 for the Club. Well done Alan Gossett and the boys, better luck next year.
Two of the BSM men qualified for the final of the MDL Pairs final and were agonisingly beaten by one shot. Nonetheless the pair of Derek Powell and Tug Wilson should take pride in doing so well in the competition and enhancing the Club's playing reputation into the bargain.
For the Ladies it was a year of what might-have-been. Both 'A' and 'B' teams found it harder in their new divisions of the SDLBL. The Ladies 'A' team managed a creditable 4th place but it turned out to be a bit too much for the 'B' team who were relegated. I am sure that both teams will have benefitted from the experience and it will stand them in good stead for next year.
Both of the RMT teams did well enough whilst, on occasion being penalised for sticking to the rules. Primarily this league has been set up to bring on newer bowlers to bowling competitions. BSM has always done its best to stick to this and has sometimes been beaten for its trouble. However, we will continue to do what is right and as the results of the other Club teams show, our newer players are all the better for it. Thanks to all of our girls and boys for doing so well and we hope you have learnt lessons that will serve you well in the future. Our thanks must also go to our selectors who have found it difficult at times to put together suitable teams.
The weekend of the 8th and 9th September saw the Club Finals take place. As you would expect some good bowling was on show on both days. First up we must thank our event organiser Chris Hall for a sterling job organising the different matches on the day and before. It is never an easy job and one that does not get the credit for which it deserves. Our thanks from all who took part on the day and the days before.
The Presentation Evening will take place at Churston Golf Club on 7th December 7.00pm for 7.30pm.
Last Sunday the annual Ladies versus Gents game took place. The result is secondary to the great atmosphere that it generates. Everyone brought a plate and a good bit of fun was had by all. I am sure with a bit of rain the blood on the green will wash away!!
That is it for this season I hope all our members come through the winter unscathed and emerge ready to do battle again in 2019.
To those who won, well done. To those who didn't, keep trying. The winners were losers as well at one time. Winter well.
